Santiniketan has a way of capturing your heart and spirit. During my first visit in this magical land when I was just a kid, this place etched in my heart in a certain way, steeped in art, culture, and the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore. Recently, I returned after so many years, and while the essence of Santiniketan felt just as vibrant, there was a lot of things going on in this amazing place.

How to Reach Santiniketan:
Getting to Santiniketan from Kolkata is a journey filled with anticipation. Trains frequently run from Howrah to Bolpur, whisking you away in about 2-3 hours. Once I arrived in Bolpur, a quick auto-rickshaw ride brought me to the heart of Santiniketan. For those who prefer to drive, it’s about a 3-4 hour journey along NH19, offering beautiful views that set the tone for your adventure.
Things to Do in Santiniketan:
As I explored Visva Bharati University, I felt a deep connection to Tagore’s vision, more than the last time. Walking through the campus felt like stepping into a living museum, rich with stories and creativity. The Tagore Museum, in particular, was a highlight, showcasing the life and works of the legendary poet.

If your visit aligns with January, the Poush Mela is an experience not to be missed. The vibrant fair bursts with local crafts and folk performances, celebrating the region’s cultural traditions. The atmosphere buzzes with music and laughter, making it a feast for the senses.

A stroll through the nearby Sonajhuri Forest was a breath of fresh air. The chirping birds and the rustle of leaves created a peaceful backdrop, and the clamor of sellers with their colorful merchendise took my breath away. The serene forest in the backdrop of the market is a totally different experience, inviting me to pause and soak in nature’s beauty. The Nearby Kopai riverside is a treasure to the senses, the countryside expanding to a vast meadow while the river flows below. The spiritual side in me was tapped as I entered the holy shrine of Kankalitala, a little distance from Santiniketan. Interacting with local artisans was another enriching experience. I wandered through the streets, discovering unique handcrafted items, from terracotta pieces to handwoven textiles, each telling a story of the rich cultural heritage of Santiniketan.
Culinary Traditions:

Santiniketan’s culinary scene is diverse, yet rooted into simplicity. Local eateries offer a variety of dishes that emphasize fresh ingredients and traditional cooking methods, serving authentic Bengali staples including fish, meat and vegetable preparations. Sharing meals with locals is a delightful way to experience the warmth and hospitality that the community is known for.
Stay Options:
When it came to accommodations, I found the Santiniketan Eco-Stay particularly appealing. Its commitment to sustainability and comfort made it a perfect retreat, it felt like I have direct connection to the essence of this place.
