The Gorkhey Silent Valley trek is a hidden gem nestled between Darjeeling and Sikkim, offering breathtaking scenery and a truly immersive experience in nature. During my recent trip, I embarked on this adventure and discovered the untouched beauty of Gorkhey, a small village surrounded by majestic mountains and dense pine forests.
Beginning of Gorkhey Trek
Day 1…
On the first day of our journey, we were picked up from NJP and made our way to Bhareng, a charming village in Sikkim. We stayed at a cozy homestay, where we indulged in delicious local cuisine and immersed ourselves in the warm hospitality of the locals.

Day 2…
The following day, we began our trek from Bhareng to Gorkhey after a hearty breakfast. The initial 2-kilometer hike took us through enchanting forests, and we even had a thrilling encounter with the roar of bears nearby. Crossing the Gorkhey River, we finally arrived at Gorkhey, my dream village. Since my last visit four years ago, the village had undergone some changes, with more homestays now available. However, the purity and warmth of the place remained unchanged.
Memories of Gorkhey
Gorkhey captivated us with its thick pine forests and the tranquil flow of the Gorkhey River, which marks the border between West Bengal and Sikkim. After settling into our homestay, we relished a delicious lunch of hot Khichri, accompanied by homemade ghee and papad. Following our meal, we ventured to the river, encountering wild strawberries along the road. Taking a refreshing dip in the cold water, we returned to the homestay, where we spent the evening by a cozy campfire, relishing the cool weather and sharing stories.

Day 3…
The next day, we embarked on a trek from Gorkhey to Rammam via Samandan. Samandan, a serene village located about 2 kilometers uphill from Gorkhey, offered a picturesque tabletop expanse amidst the lush pine forests. Continuing our journey, we trekked through the dense jungle of Rammam, encountering small water streams and basking in the sunlight filtering through the pine branches. In the afternoon, we reached Rammam and enjoyed a leisurely lunch, followed by some rest. In the evening, we visited the Rammam primary school ground, where we played cricket with the local children, creating unforgettable memories.
Farewell to the Silent Valley
Day 4…
On the fourth day, after breakfast, we bid farewell to the Silent Valley and made our way back to NJP by car, a journey of approximately 135 kilometers. As we left this serene paradise, we couldn’t help but reflect on the invaluable takeaways from our experience. The trek allowed us to create cherished hiking memories, witness awe-inspiring natural landscapes, and escape the clutches of technology and pollution for a few days. Moreover, the genuine hospitality of the local people left a lasting impression on us, reminding us of the beauty of human connections.
